The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour Championships were held last week over 9 golf courses in Hilton Head, S.C.; 950 golfers competed in 5 separate flights for the honor of being named a National Champion. Some golfers treat the event like a golf vacation, and some golfers come to play - like Albie Sanguiliano, an A Flight player with a 6.5 index from Flemington, NJ. Albie's week started out with a Hole-In-One on the Par 3 7th during a practice round at CC Of Hilton Head; as you can imagine, he cleaned up in junk and won all the bets that day.
Playing against 208 golfers in his flight, Albie found himself among a group of players 4 strokes back from the lead after Day Two, having shot rounds of
77 at The Ocean Course @ Sea Pines on Day One and 81 at CC Of Hilton Head on Day Two. On Day Three, he started play at the Par 5 4th hole at The Ocean Course @ Sea Pines - and promptly drained a long putt for an Eagle 3! After 11 holes of the round, Albie was 6 under-par and starting to get nervous - but he somehow managed to put those thoughts aside and finish the round. Albie finished the round with yet another long putt for birdie - which turned out to be the winning putt! He had come from behind, shot a 68 with an Eagle and 7 birdies - and won the National Championship by one stroke!
So you made a couple birdies last weekend and won a $10 skin? You cleaned up and won a $20 nassau? Albie's Eagle 3 on his first hole of the day won the only "skin" on his golf course - worth $980! When you see Albie, ask him to buy you a beer - tell him it was for the Hole-In-One!
