Tour Edge Exotics XCG7

Tour Edge Golf has updated the Exotics XCG line with the XCG7 and XCG7 Beta drivers plus new fairways, hybrids and irons for 2014.

The new drivers are adjustable and there are two different club head sizes, the XCG7 at 460cc and the Beta at 440cc. In addition to the smaller size the Beta has a deeper face to produce lower spin. Both have loft options from 8.5 to 12 degrees in ½ degree increments.

According to the company the Exotics XCG7 AND XCG7 Beta fairways are designed to be more forgiving than previous models and have a lower profile face and large clubhead. The Beta model offers a smaller head, deeper face, and produces a slightly lower, more penetrating trajectory.
The new hybrids also have regular and Beta models to accommodate golfers having a range of skill levels. The XCG7 offers a larger, shallower face to produce a higher trajectory while the Beta has a more compact shape and deeper face for workability and a more penetrating ball flight preferred by better players. Exotics XCG7 IRONS have an improved pocket cavity iron design to date and are cast in one piece from 431 stainless steel. Tour Edge says the new design provides better feel and more stability in a classic-style head design.

SLDR 430 – Building On A Good Thing

To complement its best-selling SLDR drive, TaylorMade Golf has come out with a smaller clubhead version aimed specifically for use by better players. At 430 cc the new SLDR is more compact than the original 460 cc model but uses the same technology to produce distance and control player controlled adjustments.

“We put low forward CG in a smaller head to make a driver that tour pros love,” said Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s Senior Director of Product Creation for Metalwoods. “SLDR 430 makes it easier to shape shots without sacrificing distance.”

Like the 460, the 430 weight placement moves the center of gravity towards the sole and forward toward theclubface giving a better ball launch with lower spin low. It also makes of the 20-gram sliding weight TMaG introduced on the 460 last August for fade or draw bias. For loft adjustment the 430 has TaylorMade’s “Loft-sleeve Technology,” a 12 position hosel with plus or minus 1.5 degrees of change.

Pricing, Options and Availability
Available in three lofts – 9.5°, 10.5° and 12°, SLDR 430 is equipped with a Fujikura Speeder 67 graphite shaft andTaylorMade high-traction grip. The Tour Preferred version, SLDR 430 TP, combines the same clubhead with the tour-caliber Fujikura Speeder Tour Spec 7.3 graphite shaft. A variety of custom shafts are also available. SLDR 430 and SLDR 430 TP begins December 20 at a suggested retail price of $399.

Rapture in a Driving Iron

Driving irons, 1-irons and even 2s and 3s have become oddities if not downright scarce but Ping Golf is bucking that trend with their Rapture Driving Iron for very good reasons.

Ping felt a low-loft iron was needed to give better players the option of added control especially in terms of trajectory that is provided by an iron compared to hybrids, which in recent years have chased long irons virtually to extinction.

“The Rapture driving iron has been well-received by tour pros because it provides longer shots and a controlled trajectory,” said John Solheim, Ping Chairman & CEO. “You have the best of both worlds. It’s more forgiving and generates much faster ball speed than the 2-iron equivalent, yet it launches lower and spins far less than a comparable hybrid. The low, penetrating trajectory offers control and command, which is essential for keeping the ball under the wind, for example, or when you’re playing a hard, fast course and you want to maximize roll out.”

With a loft of 18 degrees (essentially the same as what is thought of as a 2-iron loft), the Rapture has a high modulus of inertia created by tungsten weighting in the heel and toe. There is also a wide sole for help getting the ball out of difficult lies, which of course is a major benefit of hybrids versus irons. According to Ping, the result is a low trajectory penetrating ball flight.

The stock Rapture shaft is the TFC 949 graphite and ?-inch longer than a standard 2-iron.

Ping Rapture Driving Iron:
17-4 stainless steel body with 455 stainless steel face
Tungsten heel and toe weights
39.75-inch length
18º loft head
Foggy-chrome finish
Stock graphite shaft: TFC 949 with chrome PVD finish (R, S, X flexes)
U.S. MSRP: $220.00

Baffler XL & Bio Cell From Cobra

By ED TRAVIS

Cobra Golf has two new lines for the 2014 season a new line – one an update of a previous success and the other commemorating the 40 years since the original Baffler.

Bio Cell for next season builds on the AMP design and has two driver models, the Bio Cell with all of Cobra's design goodies: MyFly8 adjustable hosel, SmartPad, E9 Face and BiO Cells replacing the AMP cells. The Bio Cell+ has a 440cc head and the similar features. Expect to see this one the PGA Tour in the hands of Rickie Fowler and other Cobra staff members.

BiO Cell Drivers will be available in five standout shades: Blue Aster, Black, Barbados Red, Vibrant Orange and Silver. It is part of a full line including BiO CELL Fairways, Hybrids and Irons. Both the fairways and hybrids are adjustable and offers the same five colors as the driver.

Baffler, the iconic utility club name, has been brought back by Cobra as the Baffler XL for a line of men's and women's drivers, fairways, hybrids and irons each being easily identifiable sporting a Legion Blue clubhead color scheme.

The game improvement category Baffler XL Driver has a larger clubface than Cobra's AMP CELL Offset Driver it replaces with more of the face is located above the low CG. The larger face creates more trampoline effect for more consistency with hits across the face and more confidence on the tee.

"We increased the effective face area, lowered the CG and designed our largest driver face ever to deliver an easy to hit driver," commented Tom Preece, Vice President of Research & Development. "The Baffler XL Driver is an easy to hit driver packed with technology to hit it far and straight."

Baffler XL Fairways and Hybrids have a steel face with more flex for higher ball speed and a super low center of gravity from 30% more tungsten weighting than the Baffler T-Rail+ and a shallower face. The well-known Baffler rails have been made bigger to lessen drag with the ground at impact.

"The Baffler XL Fairways and Hybrids were designed with the specific intent to make golf easier," said Preece. "We achieved that through the combination of a high MOI clubhead, low CG, pronounced rails and increased Tungsten in the perimeter. All of these technologies work together to increase ball speed, lower spin, improve confidence at address and ultimately make the ball go farther and make golf easier and more enjoyable."

Is Golf Now Good For Your Course

Posted By Golf Operator Magazine on Oct 31, 2013 | 30 comments
This article is written by Johnny LaPonzina, President of Professional
Course Management, who has successfully owned, operated, or managed 19
golf courses in South Florida during his career. He is the past
President of the South Florida PGA and a member of our PGA Hall of
Fame.
*************
I'd like to take this opportunity to address PGA professionals not
only in the South Florida section, but every PGA section in the
country of my major concerns of the current jeopardy and threat to our
public golf course industry with third party tee time booking agents.
In PCM's 30 years of owning, operating, or managing golf courses in
South Florida, we have faced numerous obstacles and challenges
including: hurricanes, economic slowdowns, aging demographics, an over
abundance of golf courses, and a gradual decline in the growth of the
game of golf. Having said that, the current dilemma and real imminent
danger to our golf courses is allowing barter times that are given to
third party booking agents with no floor as to what they can charge
for a round of golf at your course.
This policy is destroying the very core and integrity of golf courses
in their ability to price their rounds of golf fairly and in relation
to the revenue they need to generate to maintain their courses and
keep them open. Numerous golf course management companies,
municipalities, and public golf course owners have expressed their
outrage and objections to barter times being sold for as much as 80% ‐
90% off the regularly posted prices. In South Florida alone, two or
three barter times per day can be sold at quality golf courses for
rates as low as $5 per round for green fees and carts. We are training
our customers to go online where they find hundreds of tee times
available every day at rates which in some cases can be as much as 90%
discounted.
These barter tee times are now competing with our own golf courses for
customers on an uneven playing field. For example, a course may have a
posted rate of $35 and the consumer can pay $5 or $6 for that same
round of golf by booking it online through a third party booking
agent. Our ability to price our courses fairly and equitably is being
destroyed and challenged by these practices. While the barter time
prices may be profitable for the third party booking agent, they are
severely effecting what the perceived value for a round of golf should
be.
I believe the explosion and growth in these barter tee time practices
is a serious and imminent threat to every PGA golf professional's job
and to every public and municipal golf courses ability to price their
course fairly and equitably to ultimately survive. Trading golf
inventory for marketing is creating long time problems for our
industry. We are causing severe damage to our credibility to our
regular customers who now expect to play golf with an 80% or 90%
discount to get their loyalty. Further, it helps destroy our resort
and tourist play by eroding seasonal rates and profits which we all
depend on.
All public golf courses need to be aware of the severity of this
problem and with cooperation the problem can be fairly resolved. If a
golf course feels that they are generating enough rounds to warrant a
barter tee time, then all they have to do is put a floor to the price
that the
barter time can be sold for and that price should be the same as your
public rate that any golfer walking in would pay. Competing for
golfers then becomes an even playing field.
I strongly feel that as an industry we must address this issue as it
will be a destructive force going forward. Many golf courses in South
Florida understand this issue clearly and have taken steps to resolve
it. If the barter tee time prices are not controlled with a floor to
their price, then courses should consider delisting with that third
party booking agent. In the end, if the third party booking agents
have no courses, they have no business.
I'm asking all PGA golf professionals at public courses to cooperate
with a united front to help resolve this issue and make third party
tee time booking agents a potential benefit rather than a severe
liability to our golf course industry.
Sincerely,
Johnny LaPonzina, President
Professional Course Management

Callaway X2 Hot Line Up

By ED TRAVIS

The 2014 version of the 'Phrankenwood' Phil Mickelson used in the
Masters and his British Open win is part of Callaway Golf line up of
clubs for the next year, the X2 Hot. Building on increases in market
share (Callaway share of fairways doubled in 2013) the company says
the new X2 Hot clubs – drivers, fairways, hybrids, irons each with a
Pro version – will be in retail outlets in mid-January.

"With the X2 Hot line, we challenged ourselves to reinvent each
product to meaningfully improve distance, speed and forgiveness across
every category," said Dr. Alan Hocknell, Callaways's Senior Vice
President, R&D. "We worked hard for every extra gram of discretionary
weight, every thousandth of an inch of metal, to increase ball speed
and overall distance while improving total performance, especially on
off-center impact."

The Phrankenwood design is reflected in the Deep series with an X2 Hot
Pro 2Deep, a 3Deep and a 5Deep offering. Stocks shafts are the same as
the driver. The new product introduction retail price is $229.99. X2
Hot fairways have a cup steel face and an updated version of their
"Standing Wave" internal weighting

X2 Hot Drivers has the Advance Optifit Hosel for player adjustment of
loft and lie independent of each other plus two lie adjustments,
either neutral or draw. The standard version has a 460cc clubhead
available in 9 degree, 10.5 degree and 13.5 degree HT lofts with an
Aldila Tour Blue shaft. The Pro, in an 8.5 degree only, has a smaller
440cc clubhead and a 7 gram external weight. The X2 Hot Pro comes with
the Aldila Tour Green shaft and price for both models is $349.99.

Hybrids in the X2 Hot line have the cup face and Standing Wave
weighting, a first in a Callaway hybrid. The result is a sweet spot
that's an amazing 13 times larger than that of the X Hot hybrid.
Standard models will come in a choice of 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-Hybrid and
16 degree, 18 degree, 20 degree and 23 degree lofts in the Pro model.
Shaft offerings are the same the X2 Hot woods and each hybrid has a
retail price of $199.99.

Standard X2 Hot irons have a deep undercut and a high MOI along with a
repositioned center of gravity – each aimed at increasing distance for
the average golfer. In the stock steel shaft (True Temper Speed Step
85) reail is $799.99. The Pro model has a thinner face, no undercut
cavity and the standard steel shaft is the Project X 95 Flighted shaft

PING S55 Irons

PING S55 Irons
By ED TRAVIS

PING’s new S55 irons were designed for use by better players and have already been seen on Tour in the bags of Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan.

“The S56 has contributed to more than 30 tour wins worldwide, including an Open Championship, and its record has generated a lot of anticipation for the follow-up model,” said PING Chairman and CEO John Solheim. “But that kind of challenge excites us. We’re motivated by pushing innovation, and we were able to elevate performance with the S55 in key areas. Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Ángel Cabrera are some of the players who switched right away, and validation from the game’s best players tells us that we got it right.”

Solheim said these professionals especially like that S55s allow more control of the face prior to impact and that means more ability to work the ball which added to design’s increased forgiveness makes a very playable iron.

S55 Irons Specs:
17-4 stainless steel body
Tungsten toe weighting for more forgiveness
Vertical stabilizing bar adds distance control and feel
Custom tuning port made from thermoplastic elastomer softens impact sound and feel
Larger CTP sits deeper in the cavity to optimize launch conditions
Thinner face helps increase ball speed for added distance
Precision-machined face, grooves and back cavity ensure consistent performance

Miura MB001 Irons

Miura MB001 Irons
By ED TRAVIS

Miura Golf has been making their Tournament Blade forged irons and the Series 1957 Small Blade and now for the first time since 2007 has a new muscle backed forged blade tagged the MB001.

"We don't automatically bring out a new blade every year, so this is a big event," says President Adam Barr. "The only calendar we operate on is the one in the minds of the Miuras. When they say a club is ready, we go. The MB001 contains the benefits of all the lessons we have learned in watching irons perform, since the Tournament Blade came out in 2007 and the Small Blade arrived in 2006. Players will notice the quality right away."

The MB001 has a reworked sole for better interaction and for better players it has the clean topline they like in an iron. This design is the result of years of study and careful consideration of iron performance by the Miura family. The project was led by Yoshitaka Miura, eldest son of founder Katsuhiro Miura and a club-grinding expert who learned under his father. He heeded the advice of his brother Shinei, who supervises forging operations at the company's factory in Himeji, Japan, as well as his father.

Authorized dealer/fitters around the world will have the MB001 for fitting next week. They carry a suggested retail per club is $235 and $250 for certain models of upgraded shafts.

The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour Championships

The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour Championships were held last week over 9 golf courses in Hilton Head, S.C.; 950 golfers competed in 5 separate flights for the honor of being named a National Champion. Some golfers treat the event like a golf vacation, and some golfers come to play - like Albie Sanguiliano, an A Flight player with a 6.5 index from Flemington, NJ. Albie's week started out with a Hole-In-One on the Par 3 7th during a practice round at CC Of Hilton Head; as you can imagine, he cleaned up in junk and won all the bets that day.

Playing against 208 golfers in his flight, Albie found himself among a group of players 4 strokes back from the lead after Day Two, having shot rounds of
77 at The Ocean Course @ Sea Pines on Day One and 81 at CC Of Hilton Head on Day Two. On Day Three, he started play at the Par 5 4th hole at The Ocean Course @ Sea Pines - and promptly drained a long putt for an Eagle 3! After 11 holes of the round, Albie was 6 under-par and starting to get nervous - but he somehow managed to put those thoughts aside and finish the round. Albie finished the round with yet another long putt for birdie - which turned out to be the winning putt! He had come from behind, shot a 68 with an Eagle and 7 birdies - and won the National Championship by one stroke!

So you made a couple birdies last weekend and won a $10 skin? You cleaned up and won a $20 nassau? Albie's Eagle 3 on his first hole of the day won the only "skin" on his golf course - worth $980! When you see Albie, ask him to buy you a beer - tell him it was for the Hole-In-One!

Exotics CB Pro

Exotics CB Pro
By ED TRAVIS

Tour Edge Golf’s Exotics brand was launched nine years ago specifically for clubs that would have higher price points than their middle of the road Bazooka line. Justification for that price differential was straightforward and easy since Exotics would make use of more expensive materials and manufacturing techniques.

Since then, Exotics have become successful and a hallmark of the Tour Edge reputation. Now the new limited edition Exotics CB Pro fairway continues that tradition.

The CB Pro has a the smaller head size used in the CB2 fairways but most noteworthy is the sole with what the company has named as a “Slip Stream” design. Tour Edge says the design minimizes contact with the turf and therefore more clubhead speed is retained which of course means more distance and control. And company testing showed, “minimal turf contact occurs regardless of the attack angle and position of the head at impact.”

Construction of the CB Pro makes use of the Exotics brand technique of combo-brazing a beta titanium cup face to a steel body making for a head of very high strength and pushing the limit of response time set by the USGA. The CB Pro also has the multiple thickness “trampoline face” of the CB2.

The Fujikura Speeder 757 and 661 are provided in the way of shaft choices with the Fujikura 661 being especially for use by better players.

David Glod, president said, “When we decided to create the Exotics line, this is the type of club I had envisioned. It’s very exciting to be introducing a product of this caliber to the market; there isn’t anything else like it. Is it expensive? Yes, probably the most expensive fairway wood available to the public. But, it’s just that good combined with the Speeder shafts and it’s also packaged with a high-end, leather headcover from Stitch Golf.”

As with all Tour Edge clubs the Exotics CB Pro fairways a lifetime warranty and 30-day play guarantee. Suggested retail is $499.99. Expect to see it in retail stores next month.

Adams XTD

By ED TRAVIS

Adams Golf new XTD family includes a new driver, fairways, hybrids and forged irons but the driver and irons are especially interesting.

“Quite frankly, these XTD products are the best we make thanks to a spare-no-expense mindset to create game-changing technology,” said Justin Honea, Senior Director of Research and Development. “We ignored convention, built with premium materials and pushed the limits to deliver jaw-dropping ball speed increases off the face for every club in the bag.”

The XTD driver according to the company has the hottest face of any on the market which combined with an aerodynamic clubhead plus the “Cut-Thru” slots Adams pioneered produces exceptional results. In addition each XTD driver is tested four times during manufacturing to ensure the clubface is as close to the USGA limits for flex as possible.

“We’re touting that it’s the hottest face in golf by using the strictest manufacturing tolerances,” said Honea. “Every feature we’ve built into the XTD family is distinctive, and we’ve merged them all together into the ultimate driver.”

XTD irons are made by a multi-piece forging process and have the Cut-Thru Slot also along what Adams describes as a floating face and hollow design with tungsten weights in the sole. Each set will have low-spinning Adams DHy hybrids for the 3- and 4- irons with forged cavity-backs (5-7) and musclebacks (8-PW) irons.

XTD drivers ship December 15, 2013 with a MSRP of $399.99. The Ti fairway woods and hybrids will be out November 15 at a MSRP of $299.99 per club.
Shipping on December 1, XTD forged irons include KBS C-Taper steel shafts for an MSRP of $1,099.99 or Aldila RIP Tour 115g graphite shafts with an MSRP of $1,199.99.
