Spring Will Bring Big Changes For Local Golf Scene

Although old man winter is stubbornly extending his stay in the tri-state area, we here at Tri-State Golfer Magazine are psyched up for the start of the 2013 golf season. Whenever it gets here, it will bring many new waves with it, several of which are highlighted in our just-released Spring 2013 issue. These include our cover story on the new Limerick Golf Club in Limerick, Pa. A new ownership group took over at Limerick GC last summer and immediately began work restoring this fabulous Montgomery County daily-fee club (affordable memberships are also available) to its proper status as one of the best all-around facilities in the tri-state area. Not only does Limerick GC boast an underrated golf course, but an excellent restaurant in The Sandtrap Grille and a first-class banquet facility in The Loft. Check Limerick GC out at www.limerickgolfclub.com.
Our Spring 2013 issue also highlights Kings Cross Knickers, a niche golf apparel company based in upstate New York that is making a strong impact in the industry courtesy of the innovative styles and fabrics of its products. Kings Cross is offering a special in conjunction with the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club (June 10-16). Customers can log onto www.kingscrossknickers.com and purchase a custom-made complete outfit (cap, shirt, knickers, socks) for a discounted price. Just type in the coupon code USOPEN to take advantage of this great offer.
Matching the eagerness of the crew at Limerick GC for the 2013 season to begin is the new ownership group at Great Bear Golf Club in East Stroudsburg, Pa. Led by Charlie Kirkwood, owner of the nearby Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort, home to A.W. Tillinghast’s first-ever design, the group took control of Great Bear GC, which features a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, in the fall of 2012 and, again just like the folks at Limerick GC, went right to work refurbishing one of the most unique golf courses in Northeast Pennsylvania. A grand re-opening is set for this spring. Find out more information at www.greatbeargc.com.
Each golf season also inevitably brings changes for golf professionals. Some are starting 2013 in new places. You can read about a few of these in the TSG News Ticker in our Spring 2013 issue, most notably the change at Riverton Country Club in Cinnaminson, N.J. where Kevin Duffy replaces Fred Phillips as the club’s head PGA professional. Phillips retired after 46 years at Riverton CC.
After wrapping up our latest issue, you might think the staff here at Tri-State Golfer would be taking some time to get our games ready for the golf season. Actually, our golf bags are still stored in our basements. Instead, we’ve been hard at work getting ready for what will surely be our most impressive issue to date. Our U.S. Open special edition is coming along nicely. We know very well that there will be no shortage of “special editions” for the Open from various publications in the area, but we can guarantee that ours will be the most informative and the most unique. Among the many features will be a complete breakdown of all 18 holes, each courtesy of a PGA professional, 18 spots on Merion’s famed East Course that will give the pros absolute fits, the best places on the golf course to watch the tournament, and much, much more. Log on to www.tristategolfer.com regularly for info. on when and where to get your U.S. Open special edition of Tri-State Golfer Magazine. Until then, let’s hope old man winter finally moves on out.
